Heart Of Gold

On 11 March 2011, Japan was struck by devastating earthquakes and tsunami. Seeing visual images of the earthquake, deathly tsunami waves that swept away vehicles and buildings, and whirlpool on the news was frightening, shocking and disheartening. Watching the wrath of nature and the aftermath brought back memories of the tsunami that hit South East Asia on the 26 December 2004.

It is times like these that we see the different sides of people.

We have seen the many sides of Jang Geun Suk and couldn't agree more that he's beautiful.

The adorable Jang Geun Suk.

Jang Geun Suk's look as Kang Mu Kyul in Marry Me Mary.

His playful side.

In a beanie.

Erm...Don't know which show or occasion perhaps normal hair look?

As Kang Geun Woo in Beethoven Virus.

Bumming around days.

....and always on the phone.

Some F1 event.

In the pool

His younger days.

He's even more beautiful now in the eyes of his fans because of his generosity and beautiful heart. Jang Geun Suk pledged to donate 10 million Yen to the Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Victims.

He's the knight in shining armor to Geum Jan Di in Boys Over Flowers, and Oh Ha Ni in Playful Kiss. He's not just a knight in shining armor in Korean Dramas, he's a knight in shining armor in real life too. Kim Hyun Joong pledged to donate 100 million Won to the victims of the Japan natural disaster victims.

Being the shining stars that they already are, Jang Geun Suk and Kim Hyun Joong of Korea shine even more with their Hearts of Gold.

Being surrounded by selfish and horrid individuals, it's truly a relief to know that there are still individuals with hearts of gold out there.

Mary Stayed Out All Night

Mary Stayed Out All Night is based on an internet comic by Won Soo Yeon called Maerineun Uibakjoong. It is also known as Mary is Out at Night / Marry Me, Mary!/ 매리는 외박중 / Maerineun Oebakjoong / Mary Stayed Out All Night/玛丽外宿中

Story

Wi Mae Ri is used to living the life of being constantly on the run from debtors who are after her father. One night, while driving around with her friends, she accidentally knocks down hippie rocker Kang Moo Kyul. Frantic that she had hit someone and over the fact that she has no means to pay for the medical charges, Mae Ri chases after Moo Kyul to ensure that he is fine. She ends up finding him performing at a pub. Fearing that Moo Kyul will press charges against her in her dire financial state, Mae Ri tailed him down to get him to sign a ‘disclaimer’ that no action will be taken against her in future.

Meanwhile Mae Ri’s father who is still on the run from debtors who are hot on his heels bumps into an old friend of his, Jung Suk. Jung Suk a successful entrepreneur has just returned to Korea from Japan after 20 years. After witnessing the assault by the debtors, Jung Suk who had harboured feelings for Mae Ri’s mother proposed a deal to Wi Dae Han. The deal was that he would settle Dae Han’s debts on one condition; that is Mae Ri will have to marry his son Jung In. In the event Mae Ri and Jung In don’t get married, Dae Han will have to returned the sum Jung Suk gave him to repay his debts.

Upon learning that she has to marry a total stranger, Mae Ri confided in her friends for a solution. They suggested that she dupe her father into believing that she has already married Moo Kyul by showing him their ‘wedding photos’.

That however failed to prevent the old folks from ensuring the marriage takes place. Undeterred by her story and overcome with fear of having to return Jung Suk’s money, Mae Ri’s father proposes a plan. The ingenious polyandrous marriage plan spans over 100 days in which Mae Ri is to divide the time spent with both men equally. At the end of the designated time frame Mae Ri has decide which of the two men is her Mr Right.

Review

Moo Kyul is a good looking, temperament rocker who was initially a street cat. He is the chick magnet that garners attention wherever he goes. He is pretty much a hippie without much money. He has a sad childhood as he was abandoned by his irresponsible mother which resulted in him developing commitment phobia. Although he works hard for a living, he finds it hard to make ends meet as he always have to help his incompetent mother settle her debts. He was unwillingly dragged into the fiasco by Mae Ri and his friends but soon developed feelings for her. He became possessive and jealous when he found that Jung In started being attracted to Mae Ri. His mischievous side is revealed when he tried to make Jung In back off from their relationship.

Jung In the son of the successful businessman Jung Suk, seems like he's living the good life but is actually an unhappy person. He is fearful of his father and has been controlled by him all his life. Jung In felt compelled to honour his promise; “Boka Gi Iru” (which means ” I will protect you” in Japanese)after recalling he had promised to protect her when they were small. That promise was made after they fell from the stairs during a piggy back ride while they were kids resulting in the scar on Mae Ri's forehead. It was really unfair to Jung In as he was just manipulated by his father. Jung In's character in the show was very pitiful because although he truly loves Mae Ri, he is willing to let her be with Moo Kyul. While he is deeply hurt that his feelings were not reciprocated he only wants her to be happy. A true gentleman, very gracious.

Jung In injured as a result of trying to protect Mary.

Kim Jae Wook (a.k.a Jung In) reminds me of those eunuchs in Chinese dramas; the high cheekbones with very little flesh on the face. Think the roles that would suit him are those of bodyguards or any role that requires poker face.lol.It’s funny to see Jung In because he is such a stiff person but yet he has to act funny.

It was really entertaining to watch Moo Kyul and Jung In trying to make each other jealous over Mae Ri.

Somehow, I get the feeling that Mae Ri regrets her action of not choosing Jung In as her partner.

Mae Ri is a street smart girl having grown up dealing with debtors that are after her gullible and incompetent father. She was against the arranged marriage and believes that marriage should be based on loyalty and love. She was initially skeptical about Moo Kyul being her 'husband' but soon finds herself attracted to him. It baffles me that Moon Geun Young won an award for her portrayal of Mae Ri. Her performance was not that exceptional and certainly does not seem like an award winning performance. Frankly speaking, if it wasn't because Jang Geun Suk was acting in the show, I probably would not have watched it. The award should have gone to Geun Suk instead of her. Mae Ri looks somewhat like a person with down syndrome. I know her fans are going to stone me to death for saying that.

Seo Jun is a beautiful actress who is temperament and hates being controlled. She is Moo Kyul's ex girlfriend who is still not over him. She still hopes to reconcile with Moo Kyul. She was really jealous when she found out that Mae Ri was dating Moo Kyul. She lost her cool when she had to sing a song composed by Moo Kyul and Mae Ri but relented when she realised that Moo Kyul's career is dependent on it.
