Past, Present and Future

The past helps us make decisions for the present, and the decision we made in the present will determine the future. What is decided now, will determine how our life would be like in the future. What makes decision making hard is because the future could not be foreseen. No one really knows whether the decision that is made today is definitely right. We can only be certain when the event has taken place and the decision made proves fruitful.

The level of difficulty for decision making increases with age. When we were young making decision between different ice-cream flavours is a breeze. When we were in school choosing the activities to participate in was relatively easy. The toughest choice to make in school was to choose which stream to be in; science or arts. Then comes the decision that will change our lives and what we will become in the future; that is the major that we choose when we enter university. This is a major turning point in life because what you major in while in university will determine your occupation upon graduation. What your occupation is will determine the type of lifestyle that you will lead.

The common saying of "If you don't like your job then just quit" is really just a sarcastic remark. For there is no such thing as quitting a profession but merely quitting from a company. In other words, hopping from one company to another but still in the same profession. There is no such thing as switching entirely from finance department to human resource to marketing or to admin. When you quit as a marketer from Company A, you will be rehired as a marketer in Company B, Company C and so forth. You will not be hired as an engineer, doctor, lawyer, or architect in the new company.

Would life be easier if there is only Hobson's choice (a.k.a no choice)?
